The role of the toxicologist in cosmetics

Le rôle du toxicologue en cosmétique

All cosmetic products placed on the European market contain a safety assessment written by a toxicologist. Without this assessment, no cosmetic product can be marketed.

The role of the cosmetic toxicologist is strictly defined by Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 on cosmetic products and requires the drafting of a safety assessment.

The safety report, an essential document in the Product Information File (PIF), must be written by a “qualified person.” The safety assessor must have a recognized degree in pharmacy, medicine, toxicology, or a master's degree in science with training in toxicology, ecotoxicology, and risk assessment.

The role of the toxicologist is multifaceted. They ensure that safe and compliant products are placed on the market. They are involved at every stage to guarantee user safety and compliance with current European regulations.

  • They validate the formula:

They assess the safety of every single substance present in your cosmetics. They check for prohibited ingredients and non-compliant concentrations and ensure the safety of the selected ingredients and raw materials.

They also validate the relevance of the tests carried out to ensure that the product is safe for consumers (stability, patch test, challenge test, eye irritation, etc.).

  • They validate the packaging:

They check the compatibility between the packaging and the formula and verify that the packaging is safe and appropriate. They check the use of the product and look for potential risks.

  • He validates the information on the packaging:

He verifies the accuracy and justification of the claims made on the packaging. He also looks at the presentation of the packaging, its labeling, instructions for use, and any other relevant information, such as warnings and precautions for use to be included on the label. They ensure that the label is accurate, informative, and contains all the mandatory information.

At Néo Cosmétique, in order to avoid being both judge and jury and to ensure completely independent expertise, we have chosen to use an independent toxicologist.
